Characteristics of DC Compound Generator


     A compound generator or compound wound generators have both series field winding and shunt field winding. One winding is connected in series and the other is connected in parallel with the armature.



Internal and External Characteristics of Dc Compound Generator :


     A shunt generator can be made to supply constant voltage by adding few turns in series with the armature. These turns are so connected as to aid the shunt turns, this arrangement is nothing but a compound generator. As the load current increases, the current through series turns also increases there by increasing the flux and hence induced e.m.f. By adjusting the number of series turns, the increased in e.m.f. can be made to balance the voltage drop due to armature resistance and armature reaction.

Characteristics of DC Compound Generator

      If the series field turns are such as to produce e.m.f. equal to drop due to armature resistance and armature reaction, then the generator is called flat compounded or level compounded.


     If the series field turns produce e.m.f. more / less than the drop due to armature resistance and reaction, then the generator is called over compounded / under compounded respectively.

Characteristics of DC Compound Generator

     The internal characteristic is mainly interested from designers point of view, whereas the external characteristic or performance characteristic is important and useful from the customers point of view, in selecting the generator for a particular purpose.
